Generous Donation Creates New Scholarships
Fostering Innovation and Excellence in M.S.A.D. No. 75 Schools

Roger M. Tarpy and Jean E. Roberts, formerly of Harpswell, have generously donated funds to create the Tarpy-Roberts Scholarship Fund.  This surprise gift was made in December of 2020.  The Tarpy-Roberts are donating $20,000 per year for up to five years to set up an endowment designed to benefit students and teachers in the multi-town district.  Philanthropists Tarpy and Roberts have entrusted the Trust Executive Board to manage the financial investment to maximize the number and size of the annual awards.
 
The endowment has been set-up and two or more scholarships will be awarded each year from the fund – at least one to a graduating senior from Mt. Ararat High School, called the Tarpy-Roberts Student Scholarship Award, and another to a member of the M.S.A.D. No. 75 faculty to fund professional enrichment or investments that would enhance their efforts to provide “meaningful educational opportunities for students”, known as the Tarpy-Roberts Faculty Award.  The awards will be up to $2000 each.
 
Mr. Tarpy and Ms. Roberts stated, “For many years we have been contributing to an educational foundation that awards scholarships to high school students in another community. The reason we began this endeavor came from our realization of the importance of support that had been provided to our own parents: Roger’s mother received financial help from a high school teacher and Jean’s father was helped by an uncle. These gifts were pivotal in allowing them to pursue further education. They also opened up their eyes to entirely new worlds, allowing each of them to become educators, a path that the two of us have also followed. This model of supporting education locally, at an individual level, has become a strong and recurring goal in our own lives. We now wish to expand our contributions to Harpswell. We were lucky enough to spend some 23 summers in Harpswell, and came to know and love the area. We also discovered that its school system had already set up a fund that harmonized with our vision, and we were excited at the prospect of adding to their endeavors. It has been a distinct pleasure working with the members of the TFOF.”
 
The Trust is extremely grateful for the Tarpy-Roberts and hopeful this gift will inspire others to consider similar donations as a type of planned giving that “invests in our students and teachers with a goal to strengthen our entire community”.   

  

A Belief and Commitment to Education
 
These awards commemorate the compassionate generosity of those individuals who enabled Nellie M. Livingston and James H. Roberts to attend college, and later to become educators, at a time when such ambitions were difficult even to imagine.
 
Those acts of generosity inspired Livingston and Roberts to dedicate themselves to the education of others, thus benefiting the lives of generations of Americans.  They reflect a belief that education, and the caring support that individuals make on behalf of others to provide educational opportunities, are central to the health of our nation’s future.

The Tarpy-Roberts Student Scholar Award is given to a graduating senior who has demonstrated extraordinary academic performance, financial need, and a strong commitment to attend an institution of higher education.
 
 
 
Applications should be received by the Trust For Our Future Office, 50 Republic Ave, Topsham, Maine 04086, or at TFOF@link75.org, by May 1 of each calendar year. For consideration please include a cover letter, application, and Mt. Ararat High School official transcript documenting a GPA of 3.8 or higher, and a letter of acceptance from an institution of higher education. The scholarship in the amount of $2,000 will be disbursed to the awardee after completion of the awardee’s first semester at an institution of high education. Please submit an official college or university transcript to Trust For Our Future Office, 50 Republic Ave, Topsham, Maine 04086, or to TFOF@link75.org, along with your current address for disbursement of scholarship funds.

The Tarpy-Roberts Faculty Award is given to one or more teachers in M.S.A.D. No. 75 who (a) have demonstrated exceptional skill, dedication and enthusiasm for the art of teaching, and (b) can identify a specific learning opportunity that, if completed, will enhance or extend his/her abilities to become an even more effective teacher in the district.
 
Applications should be received by the Trust For Our Future Office at 50 Republic Ave, Topsham, Maine 04086, or at TFOF@link75.org by May 1 of each calendar year. For consideration please include a cover letter, application, and letter of recommendation from a supervisor which addresses your exceptional skill, dedication, and enthusiasm for the art of teaching. Include in the recommendation a statement of support of your application and proposed educational opportunity by your supervisor.
 
The intent of the Faculty Award is to fund an educational opportunity for teachers to pursue expertise in an area of interest which, in turn, would have a direct bearing on his/her ability to offer meaningful educational opportunities to students. Educational opportunities may include, but are not limited, to the following:
 
*Collaborative staff projects:  Grade level teams, departments, and/or schools can create and submit proposals for opportunities, projects, and/or experiences for students that expand and/or extend student learning.
 
*Community partnerships:  School staff collaborate with community partners to provide opportunities, projects, and/or experiences that promote student growth and learning as well as build positive community relationships.
 
*Collaborative Student Partnerships/Projects:  Staff work with students to create proposals for innovative projects, opportunities, and/or experiences that promote inquiry, problem-solving, and innovation. The projects can be a classroom, departmental, grade level, and/or school-wide. 
 
*Collaborative School Partnerships/Projects:  Schools work together to create proposals for innovative projects, opportunities, and/or experiences that can be facilitated and shared between schools.
